About Faith Missionary Baptist Church

Our History

In November 1977, Faith Missionary Baptist church was organized under the leadership of the late Reverend Richard H. Harrison, II.  During such time, the congregation consisted of 16 members, including children. This in fact, marked the beginning of a journey that would be accompanied by the Lord’s many wondrous works.

Prior to obtaining a building site, members would gather for prayer meetings and business discussions at the home of Rev. Harrison and Sis. Mary Mallory.  Soon thereafter, Rev. Harrison and several of the church’s charter members purposed in their hearts to purchase a new building.  In the interim, a sister church extended an open invitation for the use of their sanctuary, allowing the congregation to conduct services every 2nd and 4th Sunday.  After sharing structures for approximately a year and a half, the time had come for the “little church within a church” to step out on Faith.
Through pledge commitments and diligently giving tithes and offerings, an apartment duplex was purchased at 133 SE 10th Street.  The building was $25,000.00.  Services were held in one room of the building and sometimes outside under the Oak Tree.  Due to the lack of financial assets, several members constructed the church’s furniture and baptism pool.  Realizing that all things were possible through Christ Jesus, members accepted the challenge of renovating and performing maintenance on the structure.  Through the craftsmanship of the pastor and members, by November 1978, the building had begun to look like a church.  Faith was indeed moving in the upward way.

After many years of service, Rev. Harrison became seriously ill.  Despite his poor health, he continued to serve as Pastor until his sunset in 1986.  Several other men of God led this congregation, including Reverend Marion Drye and Reverend Alphonso Harvey.
In April 1998, Reverend Kevin became Pastor of Faith Missionary Baptist Church.  Rev. Thorpe was ordained to the pastorate in May 1998 and was officially installed as pastor in October.  In the same month, articles of incorporation were filed with the state of Florida, and the congregation became officially known as the Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Gainesville, Florida, Inc.  The church began several outreach ministries, including television, which contributed to successful membership growth.  The Lord continued to pour out his blessings on Faith.

After recognizing the need for a new facility, the church body was able to purchase 25.46 acres of land located at Southeast 21st Avenue.  Preliminary drawings and a master site plan were created in September 1999, and plans for the new building were established.  Following the purchase of the property, several acres of land were made available to Habitat for Humanity for purchase.  Assured the sale would be successful, the church entertained the notion of selling its original structure in March 2000.  In October 2000, the church’s groundbreaking celebration was observed and the construction of the new edifice began in March 2001.  The building, complete with 4, 253 square feet of floor space and 196 theater seats, was finished in December 2001.  On December 16, 2001, the first morning worship service was held. God continued to grow and prosper the church and in 2010 an expansion project was completed that has taken our seating capacity to 500 seats with a new fellowship hall, offices and media center.  We developed a successful television ministry that aired 27 times each week to help us in our efforts to reach the lost!  Countless souls have been added to God’s family since 1977 and we are trust God’s faithfulness to add to His church daily.

Since April 2000, three deacons have been ordained and two deaconesses have been confirmed.  Faith Missionary Baptist Church has continued the legacy of offering enriching, life changing experiences, so much so, that many souls have been brought to Christ.  Each service continues the tradition of being fervent and spirit filled.  We are still on fire for God!

We have enjoyed many milestones:  In 2005 we enjoyed the ministry of Rev. Jasper Williams Jr., a nationally renowned minister from Atlanta, Ga.  In 2006 we enjoyed the ministry of Ms. Vickie Winans as the musical guest for our banquet.  In June of 2007 we were blessed by the dynamic ministry of Bishop Paul S. Morton Sr., presiding Bishop of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International.  In October 2007 we enjoyed the ministry gifts of, five time Grammy Award winner, Ms. Yolanda Adams and in 2008 we were blessed by the talents of David and Tamela Mann.  In 2010 we were pleased to introduce the CraigLewis band to our city with a stellar performance given during one of our morning services. In 2013 we hosted Sunday Best Winner LeAndria Johnson and I 2017 we co-hosted Rev. Dr. Joel C. Gregory and many other pulpit giants in the years that have followed.

God is still in the blessing business and we celebrate His goodness everyday.  We thank God for Faith Church, where we are constantly reminding others that “your family is bigger than you think.”

What Drives Us

What We Believe

ABOUT GOD

God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God.

Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2; 1 Corinthians 13:14

ABOUT MAN

Man is made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. He is the supreme object of God’s creation. Although man has tremendous potential for good, he is marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin.” This attitude separates man from God.

Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2

ABOUT ETERNITY

Man was created to exist forever. He will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with him is eternal life. Heaven and hell are places of eternal existence.

John 3:16; John 2:25; John 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; 1 John 5:11-12; Matthew 25:31-46

ABOUT JESUS

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all men by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven’s glory and will return again to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Matthew 1:22, 23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14, 15; 1 Corinthians 15:3, 4; Romans 1:3, 4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14, 15; Titus 2:13

ABOUT SALVATION

Salvation is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works – only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can man be saved from sin’s penalty. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith.

Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8, 9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1

ABOUT ETERNAL SECURITY

ecause God gives man eternal life through Jesus Christ, the believer is secure in salvation for eternity. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian.

John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10, 14; 1 Peter 1:3-5

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. The Christian seeks to live under his control daily.

2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16, 17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:1

ABOUT THE BIBLE

The Bible is God’s word to all men. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without any mixture of error.

2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105,160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5

ABOUT BAPTISM

Baptism by immersion symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus and is your public declaration that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Baptism does not save you, but shows the world that you have already been saved. And while baptism is not required for salvation, it is a biblical command and demonstrates your love and obedience to Christ.

Colossians 2:12; Acts 2:41; Ephesians 2: 8-9; Matthew 28:19-20

ABOUT COMMUNION

Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is an ordinance given to all believers by Jesus Christ to remember his sacrifice for us and to symbolize the new covenant. The elements of bread and wine or juice are symbols of Christ’s broken body and shed blood. Communion is not a means of salvation. Rather, it is a testament of a believer’s faith in the atoning work of the cross.

Matthew 26:26-30; Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:19,20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

Meet our pastor

Pastor Kevin W. Thorpe

senior pastor/teacher

In the spring of 1998, the Lord sent us a new pastor, Reverend Kevin W. Thorpe. He is a son of the historic Mt. Ararat Baptist Church located in Jacksonville, Florida. Under the leadership of Pastor David A. Lattimore, Jr., Pastor Thorpe served for nearly seven years as an Associate Minister, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Minister (3 yrs.).

Pastor Thorpe has a heart for “reaching the lost” and “discipling the saved” through exciting expository preaching and intensive bible study classes and seminars. He is also dedicated to ministering to the needs of the community by way of an Outreach Ministry program. Pastor Thorpe is truly a man of God!

The Lord has continued to be faithful in blessing our church. Under the leadership of Pastor Thorpe, we have become an official Non-profit Florida Corporation, purchased property, built a new sanctuary, began a television outreach ministry and much, much, more!

God is still in the “Blessing Business!”
